HREC 243 Backpacking

This course is designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in a backpacking activity, serving as a solid introductory course for the beginning backpacker and good refresher course for participants with backpacking experience. The course will cover the history, philosophy, rules, fundamental/progression of techniques, strategy, and safety in the activity of backpacking. The course includes a backpacking excursion. Fee required.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

A. Demonstrate knowledge about equipment, trail ettiquite, and LNT ethics.       B. Understand the progression between overnight car camping to weekend excursions to weeklong backcountry trips.       C. Be able to effectively plan, pack, and participate in a weekend backpacking trip.
