SURT 102 Surgical concepts

An introduction and overview of the profession and history of surgical technology. This course also includes an introduction to the operating room (OR), hospital administration, hospital facilities and the chain of command. With a focus on patient safety, the surgical patient is discussed including the OR environment, environmental hazards and safe working conditions.  An introduction to microbiology and infection control will be explored as well as control of the OR physical facilities. The course includes pre-operative patient preparation, intraoperative patient monitoring devices, intraoperative patient preparation, post-operative patient complications and discharge instructions. Research of legal and ethical concepts and risk management as they apply to working in a health care field will be discussed in this course.

III. Catalog Course Description
