DANC 140 Beginning Tap Dance

This class will introduce the basic fundamentals of beginning tap. Rhythm exercises, musicality and beginning tap choreography will be taught. Each class will include tap terminology and Broadway-style tap routines will be developed throughout the semester. Barre work, across the floor, and center-floor work will be introduced. Tap shoes are required. This course may be repeated once.

III. Catalog Course Description

This class will introduce the basic fundamentals of beginning tap. Rhythm exercises, musicality and beginning tap choreography will be taught. Each class will include tap terminology and Broadway-style tap routines will be developed throughout the semester. Barre work, across the floor, and center-floor work will be introduced. Tap shoes are required. This course may be repeated once.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate progress toward mastery in technical skills and knowledge at the beginning level within the genre of tap dance
  • Mastery of basic tap rhythm and sound
  • Grasp and retain the sequence of exercises and combinations
  • Move quickly from learning to performing
  • Memorize and reproduce sequences showing proficiency in performing rhythms for artistic expression in tap at the beginning level
  • Analyze and respond to rhythm exercises using the language skills used in tap dance (understand and apply tap vocabulary to tap sequences)

Introduce physical tap movement, explain rhythm exercises, and lead the class in movement and choreography including work at the barre and across the floor and center floor combinations Working tap vocabulary as it applies to the tap discipline Beginning level instruction designed to develop the students stamina, body awareness, vocabulary, arhythmicality, musicality and tap style as it applies to presentation and performance

VI. Delivery Methodologies

Required Assignments

Attendance and participation in class. Students are expected to be in every class. Learning to tap dance requires that the body do it. Students will not gain body awareness, stamina, arhythmicality, or the ability to learn new movement or generate their own movement by hearing about what happened in class from a classmate or reading a book. There is no way to make up material or missed experiences. Students are granted 1 permissible absence and may make up one absence per semester by participating in (if appropriate) or observing and writing a one-page reflection of another movement class. Instructor must approve class make-up assignments.

Required Exams

Learn to memorize and reproduce choreographed sequences and show proficiency in performing movement for artistic expression in tap dance at the beginning level. A tap vocabulary test will be given as a final followed by video assessment and a written self-evaluation
