HACT 229 Wellness Through Running/Walking

This wellness course introduces students to all seven dimensions of wellness (physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental, financial) and allows students to practice making changes in at least one of the dimensions by establishing, practicing and reflecting on individualized SMART goals related to running or walking as a wellness activity. This course is designed for the beginning runner to the advanced runner. Course content includes mechanics of efficient running/walking, presentation of training systems, safety, appropriate shoes, hydration and the prevention and care of common running/walking injuries. This course meets the general education requirement for wellness.

III. Catalog Course Description

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the changes from the pre- and post- speed and endurance tests
  • Consistently practice assigned running/walking plans at least 3 times per week and record on course log sheet
  • Read assigned readings with topics such as running/walking safety, hydration, injury prevention and appropriate shoes
  • Evaluate knowledge through course quiz
  • Participate in assigned assignments and discussions
  • Review assigned running plans for the week
  • Select the best days and times to participate in running plans
  • Compare and contrast the changes from the pre- and post-test wellness exam
  • Develop a strategy for implementing each SMART goal
  • Evaluate goals according to the SMART characteristics
  • Identify a target behavior for at least one dimension of wellness
  • Measure progress through journaling and/or self-reporting
  • Practice a strategy for each SMART goal
  • Reflect on what factors promoted or inhibited your practice in pursuit of reaching SMART goals
