As the first course in the Registered Nursing Program sequence, the focus of this course is the development of nursing knowledge of physical and mental wellness and illness across the life span, the role of the nurse, and caring by providing patient-centered care to individuals in various health settings. Emphasis will be on the development of communication and basic nursing skills. Pharmacology, normal nutrition, medical terminology and critical thinking are integrated throughout the course. Prerequisites: Entrance to RN Program. Corequisite: BIOL 228, ENGL 102.

- Demonstrate competency in fundamental nursing psychomotor skills.
- Begin to utilize nursing process to create individualized, prioritized plans of care.
- Adhere to the responsibilities and role of the professional nurse concerning HIPPA, scope of practice, patient rights, and documentation.
- Apply critical thinking concepts in basic nursing care
- Communicate appropriate information using multiple health care communication tools
