Students are introduced to the therapeutic principles and practices underlying the treatment of patients with burns, amputations, cardiopulmonary pathologies and considerations, women's health issues, and selected age-specific disorders. Includes lab. Prerequisite: PTAE 207, PTAE 208, PTAE 211, PTAE 217. Corequisites: PTAE 204, PTAE 240.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Integrate and explain concepts of appropriate treatment given the specific diagnoses.
  • Define clinical reasoning and identify factors that affect clinical decision making.
  • Determine and demonstrate proper fit for each prosthetic or orthotic device presented given the specific pathology with clear instructions to patient and caregiver.
  • Identify and show gait deviations, positioning and therapeutic exercise program common to lower extremity prosthetic use.
  • Explain and demonstrate progressive treatment of the cardiac and pulmonary patient, including monitoring of vital signs, progression of exercise, patient education and objective measurement of tolerance to treatment.
  • Demonstrate competent instruction in a home exercise program emphasizing safe body mechanics training and postural awareness training for an obstetric patient.
  • Instruct an industrial worker patient in proper lifting techniques for work injury rehabilitation or prevention.
