III. Catalog Course Description

The Symphonic Band is a concert band comprised of both student and community musicians, and offers one performance per semester. It plays a variety of music, but concentrates on important standard band literature. This course may be repeated for a total of four credits.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Because the specific materials studied in this course vary from one semester to the next, student outcomes are cumulative in nature. After each completion of this course, a student will be better able to demonstrate the following:
  • Familiarization with a wide range of wind band literature through rehearsal and performance,
  • Familiarization with rehearsal and concert protocols,
  • Improvement in sight-reading ability,
  • Improvement in tuning ability, and
  • Improvement in the ability to play as part of an ensemble.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

One two-hour rehearsal per week, one dress rehearsal, and one concert The music performed will represent a variety of styles that may include marches, concert overtures, descriptive pieces and dances. The music will be selected based both on its appropriateness and on the ability of the ensemble. Good ensemble practices will be emphasized, including preparing individual parts outside of rehearsal, showing up on time, and behaving appropriately during services.
