III. Catalog Course Description

This course introduces evidence-based knowledge of leadership and management theories and concepts to prepare professional nurses to function across a variety of health care settings. Emphasis will be on nursing leadership accountability and influences in organizational structure, quality improvement, patient outcomes, staff supervision, and facility and patient safety.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

• Identify management and supervision concepts to facilitate conflict resolution, performance evaluations, appropriate delegation of tasks to assistive personnel, and staff education.
• Identify and report performance/quality improvement activities for client care outcomes.
• Assist with creating emergency response plans for internal and external disasters.
• Identify appropriate handling of hazardous and infectious materials in the workplace.
• Report proper incident occurrences properly utilizing verbal notifications and written documentation skills.
• Initiate and monitor effectiveness of security alerts for clients using principles of triage and evacuation protocols.
• Identify procedures for disposing of unused, outdated, or contaminated medications.
• Perform narcotic counts and identify policies for reporting narcotic count discrepancies.
