This course is designed to introduce the student to the administrative and business skills needed in a dental office. The student will be introduced to business equipment and its many uses in the dental office. Scheduling appointments, filing insurance claims, accounts receivable and payable as well as product inventory and phone etiquette are included. 

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Discuss the methods used in inventory control and the terms that relate to purchasing and inventory of supplies.
  • Increase workplace readiness by creating a resume’ and cover letter.
  • Demonstrate job interviewing techniques.
  • Discuss the role of the office manager/business assistant in the dental office.
  • Discuss the various avenues of communication and identify the differences between verbal and nonverbal communications.
  • Describe good phone courtesy and use correct phone techniques when talking with a patient.
  • Describe and compare the different types of phone calls.
  • Discuss the team concept for bettering communication within the dental office.
  • List and identify the different types of correspondence used in the facility, including the major divisions of the business letter.
  • Describe the importance of networking within the dental profession and supportive dental associations.
  • Explore employment opportunities within the dental field.
  • Describe the type of relationship the patient and the dental team should have.
