III. Catalog Course Description

This course explores materials and methods for teaching music in the elementary school. Basic skills for the classroom teacher, including music notation, classroom instruments, conducting, singing, listening and integrating music into the elementary curriculum will be examined.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Students will gain basic music skills, i.e., note reading for a recorder, singing, conducting, and playing classroom instruments.
  • Students will understand the benefits of music education at the elementary level.
  • Students will gain confidence in planning and presenting musical experiences for children. Ease in leading others in song is a major component of this course.
  • Students will create a resource notebook for personal use.
  • Students will develop an understanding of how to use music in all areas of the classroom curriculum.
  • Students will show basic proficiency in obtaining and critiquing websites for use in the elementary classroom.
