III. Catalog Course Description

This course offers an introductory overview of the possible causes and consequences of growing old from a biological, psychological, and social perspective. Focus is on the later years, and health issues therein. Individually and socially, the value of responsible lifestyle choices throughout the lifespan is emphasized. Prejudices, misconceptions, and special needs concerning aging will be explored.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate written proficiency in relevant aspects of healthy aging.
  • Conduct and report on a lifestyle interview with a well elder.
  • Participate in an inter-generational service-learning project.
  • Propose positive ways to respond to the aging process, and ageism.
  • Discuss several pertinent, and some controversial aging issues. 
  • Identify and propose best ways to manage health in the later years.

V. Topical Outline (Course Content)

Provide students with an overview of healthy aging through a variety of assignments and activities. Provide students real world knowledge through service learning projects and interview assignments.
