III. Catalog Course Description

This course presents the theory and procedures for the practice of phlebotomy and waived laboratory testing as it applies to medical laboratory personnel. Phlebotomy and laboratory quality control measures for specimen collection in healthcare facilities will be emphasized throughout this course.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Recognize the roles of the medical lab professional in the context of health care.
  • Calculate and properly report laboratory data.
  • Use effective written and verbal communication that represents competence and professionalism in the medical laboratory setting.
  • Practice patient identification procedures accurately.
  • Articulate the consequences of improper patient and/or specimen identification.
  • Describe procedures and solicit informed consent to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of specimen procurement, handling and testing priorities to laboratory test requests.
  • Verify specimen suitability and integrity.
  • Identify sources of error in specimen procurement.
  • Illustrate and explain the safety precautions used in healthcare, including standard precautions.
  • Articulate specimen storage and testing requirements for a variety of tests and specimens.
