A non-technical course designed to provide a basis for enjoyable listening through the discovery of stylistic differences between historical eras and the individual composers within the eras and through the awareness of the various performance media.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Recognize and describe performances, compositions, musicians, and recordings.
  • Comment on the music you hear, applying appropriate terminology and distinguishing features such as origin, musical era, aspects of style, instrumentation, and basic construction to develop critical thinking skills
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret recordings, compositions, events, and ideas and discuss them in terms of their cultural, intellectual, or historical contexts, demonstrating cultural sensitivity, respect for diverse points of view, and mindfulness
  • After identifying selected musicians and their works, interpret why (or whether) their lives and music are still important today.
