III. Catalog Course Description
The student is introduced to the skills in chair side procedures and assisting in a variety of dental procedures. The student learns selected laboratory procedures including the proper use, maintenance, and safety of laboratory equipment.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate proper maintenance of the dental handpieces.
- Prepare the setup and assist an amalgam procedure.
- Place and remove elastomeric orthodontic separators.
- Identify types of dental dam clamps & instruments used in a dental dam procedure.
- Identify basic hygiene instruments.
- Describe methods used in pain management during dental procedures
- Identify basic oral surgery instruments.
- Demonstrate preparation of anesthetic syringe.
- Use the dental mirror intraorally.
- Demonstrate the proper use of a dental mirror.
- Use a dental instrument intraorally.
- Identify hand (manual) cutting instruments.
- Identify dental handpieces and correctly attach them to the dental unit.
- Identify accessories and correctly attach them to the low-speed handpiece.
- Demonstrate the correct grasp and use for hand instruments.
- Demonstrate use and administration of nitrous oxide.
- Demonstrate admitting and seating the patient.
- Prepare a dental dam setup and place the dental dam on a manikin.
