CISG 101 Photoshop I*
Students will be introduced to pixel-based image editing. They will learn to open, manipulate, and save graphic files. Each student will repair/restore a damaged photo, render a realistic photo composite, and create a fantasy/artistic photo composite. The course will cover making selections, photo retouching, correcting and enhancing digital photographs, layer basics, masks and channels, typographic design, and preparing files for the Web.

III. Catalog Course Description
Students will be introduced to pixel-based image editing. They will learn to open, manipulate, and save graphic files. Each student will repair/restore a damaged photo, render a realistic photo composite, and create a fantasy/artistic photo composite. IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Students will repair and restore a damaged photo.
- Students will submit the restored photo for review and grading by the instructor. Students will also show the work in a peer review (critique) so that fellow classmates may evaluate the quality of the work and offer suggestions.
- Students will create a photo-realistic photo composite consisting of at least two separate photographs.
- Students will submit the photo composite for review and grading by the instructor. Students will also show the completed work in a peer review (critique) so that fellow classmates may evaluate the quality of the work and offer suggestions.
- Students will combine two or more photos into a fantasy/artistic photo composite.
- Students will submit the "fantasy photo" piece for review and grading by the instructor. Students will also show the completed work in a peer review (critique) so that fellow classmates may evaluate the quality of the work and offer suggestions.
V. Topical Outline (Course Content)
Identify, open, view, save and manipulate graphic files;
Navigate within Photoshop’s workspace and use the program’s panels, menus, tools and controls to navigate within and between images;
Use Adobe Bridge to preview files and file information;
Create, modify, and save accurate selections in images;
Create and manipulate masks;
Acquire images of printed photos by scanning at appropriate settings for optimal press/lab quality printed output);
Straighten, crop, adjust tonal and color characteristics, and sharpen photographic images;
Use appropriate tools and filters to repair, restore, or otherwise remove damage from photographic images;
Create, view, hide, select, move, and link layers; apply blending modes, special effects, and text to layers;
Process proprietary camera raw images and make typical color and tonal adjustments; apply optical lens correction to images;
Apply an array of filters and processes to create visual special effects in a photo composite
Know and apply the special properties and uses of many common file formats for print or Web applications; optimize images for the Web/mobile devices; distinguish between GIF and JPEG optimization.
VI. Delivery Methodologies
Required Materials
Standard 8.5 x 11 inch notebook for daily lecture notes; pocket-size steno notebook for shortcuts;
USB flash drive, 1 GB or higher recommended; blank CD or DVD for saving files at semester end;
Students will provide their own photos for the projects. For photos that are to be scanned, please attach your name and contact phone number on the back of each photo.
