This course is an introduction to procedures used in the medical laboratory. Students will learn the application of basic techniques and instruments used in all areas of medical laboratories. These correlate with core MLT courses to include activities for phlebotomy, waived testing, urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, immunology, blood banking and microbiology.

III. Catalog Course Description
This course is an introduction to procedures used in the medical laboratory. Students will learn the application of basic techniques and instruments used in all areas of medical laboratories. These correlate with core MLT courses to include activities for phlebotomy, waived testing, urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, immunology, blood banking and microbiology.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Perform lab work in a safe and ethical manner, respecting safety of patients, fellow students, laboratory staff, the public, and themselves.
- Develop situational awareness and self-confidence in the laboratory to safely organize and prioritize lab work.
- Develop professional behaviors consistent with the guidelines described by the profession, NIC Medical Laboratory Technology Program and Division of Health Profession
- Perform basic laboratory testing using lab equipment, instruments, and standard operating procedures from various laboratory department as available.
- Use of the microscope for medical oriented analysis.
- Utilize MLT core courses theory for psychomotor activities to technician. Reinforce concepts and gain basic competencies at a level of an entry level medical lab
