MUSA 222 Guitar Lesson 2 for Majors
All courses with a MUSA designation are individual music lessons. Students meet one-on-one with an instructor each week for formal lessons and are expected to devote significant time to practice outside of class. Music majors should sign up for courses ending in a "2" (e.g. MUSA 102 or 202). Students who are not music majors should sign up for lessons ending in a "0" or "1" (e.g. MUSA 100 or 101). One credit classes meet a half hour each week; two-credit classes meet an hour each week. Students may accumulate 4 credits toward graduation in courses ending in "0" or 8 credits toward graduation in courses ending in "1". Music majors may accumulate 8 credits at each level of courses ending in "2". MUSA classes carry additional fees. IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- A basic understanding of style, phrasing and articulation in plucked string music from various historical periods.
- Performance of two pieces from the standard classical guitar repertoire. Studying the pieces and bringing them up to performance level will be the predominant focus of the lessons. The objectives mentioned above will come into play, become relevant and be reinforced through the learning of the pieces. The final performance will take place at the end of the semester in FA 119 and will be open to the public.
- An understanding of the fundamental elements of classical guitar performance including even-tempered tuning, the seated position, right and left hand technique, tone production and concert projection.
- Gradual development of note-reading skills in the first through the ninth positions as appropriate to the repertoire selected for performance.
