PTAE 110 Principles & Procedures of PT*
This course develops competencies in treatment interventions used by physical therapist assistants. The rationale for treatment, progression of treatment, and working under the direction of the physical therapist, are emphasized. Students learn skills such as, bed mobility, range of motion, transfers, gait training, assistive device use, and wheelchair mobility. Infection control and safety for patients, self, and others are emphasized. Includes lab. Only those students who have been accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant Program are eligible to register for this course.

IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Demonstrate effective communications for varied audiences and purposes by the use of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
- Implement the following clinical tasks safely with respect to progression, safety, pathology, restricted weight bearing, diminished endurance, and decreased strength: Gait training, wheel chair mobility/training and transfer training.
- Demonstrate competence in hand washing and safe/effective body mechanics during all aspects of clinical treatments.
- Describe the rational for selected treatments and be able to accurately discuss patient response and tolerance with the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Problem solve by critical analysis of a patient situation and develop best practice/safety follow through based on a patient’s condition.
