Spanish for Health Professions II is the second semester of a two-course sequence designed to help heath care professionals to communicate proficiently with Spanish-speaking patients. This class integrates thematically related vocabulary, grammar, and culture.
IV. Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:
- Obtain patient information regarding ophthalmology, pregnancy, HIV, behavioral health and dental care.
- Obtain information regarding a patient’s use of complementary and alternative remedies.
- Describe cultural illnesses and culture bound syndromes
- Define etiology, curandero, yerbero, santero, culture bound syndrome
- Discuss prevalence of HIV within Latino community
- Employ basic interpretation skills in a medical environment
- Demonstrate improved speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in Spanish.

Assessment Strategy Narrative
Assessments – tests and quizzes 30%
Quizzes 10%: weekly quizzes on Moodle. The lowest 3 quiz grades will be dropped.
Exams 20%: Four content exams and one midterm oral performance. All testing will be on Moodle.
- Exams and quizzes will not be extended if you miss them.
- All Exams to be taken through ProctorFree.
When taking your exams or quizzes on Moodle, the Instructional Technology Resources Center strongly recommends you do not use your phone, use either Firefox or Chrome as your browser, and that you use a computer with a stable internet connection. You must use the Proctor Free App for All exams and the indicated quizzes.

- Questions/Quizzes on reading assignments
- Grammar assignments/Quizzes
- Papers and verbal recordings that are not midterm or final verbal assignment.
- No late assignments will be excepted.
Final exam 20%
The final exam will consist of a verbal presentation and a written exam on Moodle.
- Tests and quizzes will not be extended if you miss them.
