CHEM 100 Concepts of Chemistry

This course is a presentation of the world of chemistry as it impacts society and the individual. Topics include air and water quality, energy and fuels, nuclear power, nutrition and food, medicine and drug design, plastics, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, and other applications. The emphasis is on the connection of chemistry with everyday life.  Very limited math skills are necessary. This course will satisfy a general education core science requirement but will not serve as a prerequisite or substitute for any other Chemistry course.

The emphasis is on the connection of chemistry with everyday life.  Very limited math skills are necessary. IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Students will gain a general understanding of topics of chemistry as they apply to their everyday lives. They will appreciate that understanding science in general and chemistry, in particular, is important to everyone.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of chemical concepts and their impact on and relation to themselves and the world around them through homework, in-class assignments, essays, and exams.
  • Students will gain proficiency in basic chemical laboratory techniques and the use of common laboratory equipment. Understanding of laboratory concepts will be evaluated in lab report grades.
