III. Catalog Course Description

This course presents a systematic treatment of chemical principles and their application. Topics include nomenclature, periodicity, reactions, equations, stoichiometry, solutions, gases, introduction to the theories of the atom, equilibria, acids and bases, redox, and radioactivity. 

IV. Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of course content by being prepared to take the General Chemistry portion of the American Chemical Society’s general, organic, and biochemistry exam.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of foundational facts and processes of chemistry.
  • Calculate and interpret measured values of chemical phenomena.
  • Relate chemistry and its concepts to the world and the human experience.
  • Articulate chemical concepts to others at an introductory level.
  • Perform college level chemistry experiments in the laboratory which support and expand upon foundational concepts.
