Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to:

  • Follow the basic rules of safety for a general chemistry laboratory
  • Safely handle dangerous chemicals in a laboratory setting while under instructor supervision
  • Understand how the scientific method allows for the successful evaluation of an experiment
  • Safely and correctly use basic laboratory equipment including glassware, hot plates, burners, and other similar items
  • Follow a set of directions and achieve a desired outcome in the laboratory
  • Relate the results from an experiment to the concepts taught in the classroom portion of the class
  • Evaluate results and reach valid scientific conclusions
  • Gain confidence in their own abilities to deal with new and potentially dangerous situations
